Upper Quarter Course Summary and Objectives
Course Overview:
Differential Diagnosis, Imaging, Assessment Techniques, Exercise Prescription, Manual Therapy
Instructors:
Dana Tew, PT, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT
Jim Heafner, PT, DPT
Chris Fox, PT, DPT
Summary:
This course will prepare the clinician for managing patients with dysfunction in the Upper Quarter (shoulder, elbow, wrist & hand) region. Components from previous classes, such as Foundations and Cervicothoracic, are essential for implementing the aspects of this program first. By combining components from anatomy & kinesiology, movement impairment syndromes, repeated motions, manual therapy assessment and treatment techniques, exercise progressions, and evidence-based practice, the clinician will be able to apply an eclectic approach to their upper quarter patients. Between classes, each clinician will be expected to complete readings of the workbook and selected articles, so that they can participate in online mentoring and group discussion sessions.
Objectives:
b. Joint mobilization GH, AC, SC joints
c. Soft tissue mobilization techniques
d. Flexibility techniques
e. Manipulation techniques

Objectives:
- The clinician will have an understanding of the anatomical and pathokinesiological relationships of some of the more commonly encountered musculoskeletal dysfunctions seen in a typical outpatient orthopedic practice in the upper quarter
- The clinician will be able to apply movement impairment analysis in the diagnosis and treatment of shoulder disorders.
- The clinician will be able to utilize examination tests and procedures based on the most current evidence to effectively and efficiently diagnose a musculoskeletal pathology in the upper quarter
- The clinician will become familiar with exercise progression paradigms that are based on tissue healing and functional goals of the patient
- The clinician will be able to design a treatment program that addresses all key components of functional recovery for patient that includes (not limited to): strength, muscular endurance, proprioception, flexibility and power
- The clinician will display the ability to critically analyze the literature on various upper extremity interventions and diagnostic procedures in an analytical, concise and organized format
- The clinician will demonstrate the ability to correctly identify directional preference and prescribe repeated motions treatment to the upper quarter
- The clinician will be able to incorporate additional manual therapy techniques into their practice of the upper extremity that includes (not limited to):
b. Joint mobilization GH, AC, SC joints
c. Soft tissue mobilization techniques
d. Flexibility techniques
e. Manipulation techniques
